Tools Every Homeowner Should Have

Hammer – Most homeowners already own a hammer. There are so many uses for a hammer it is a must own. The hammer will probably be your most used tool. Driving nails, pulling nails, pounding chisels and nail sets are just a few of the uses for a hammer.

Screwdrivers - A good set of screwdrivers is another must have in your tool box. You will need both Flathead and Philips head screwdrivers in sizes small medium and large.

Flashlight  Not everything breaks during daylight or in well lighted areas. Power outages are another time when a flashlight is a handy tool. Be sure to check your batteries often.

Ladder – Changing an overhead light bulb, cleaning high places, painting, hanging wall paper and trimming shrubs are just a few of the activities that will require the use of a ladder.

Utility knife – There are so many uses for a utility knife you will find yourself reaching for it often. Uses will include everything from opening boxes, trimming linoleum, trimming carpet and cutting paint from around sticking windows.

Tape measure – The tape measure is an indispensable tool for calculating material quantities. It is important for figuring out the placement of pictures, furniture and other objects where distance is important.

Level – Take the guesswork out of leveling objects. Is that picture hanging level? The level will give you the answer.

Putty knife - A putty knife is a great tool for spreading putty and spackle. The putty knife is a tool that will be needed for repairing sheetrock and for scraping dry paint and glue.

Nail set – Finishing nails will sometimes back out of door and window trim and other woodwork. The nail set is used for sinking nail heads below the surface of the wood. The nail hole can then be filled with wood putty, sanded and repainted or stained.

Pliers - The jaws of pliers assist with grasping objects and holding them firmly. Pliers can also be used to turn, bend, twist or pull objects.

Adjustable crescent wrench – This wrench allows you to use one wrench for various size nuts or bolt sizes.

Power drill – This is a versatile tool that can be used to drill holes and it can be easily converted to a power screwdriver simply by removing the drill bit and inserting a screwdriver bit. Drill bits and screwdriver bits come in multiple sizes.

Electrical cord – Don’t skimp here. A good, well-insulated indoor-outdoor power cord is a handy tool. Use the cord to extend the reach of your power tools both indoor and outdoor power tools.

Duct Tape - Every homeowner will find a use for this versatile tool.

C-clamp – The c-clamp can be used to hold your projects in place while you saw or glue wood or other material. Use a thin piece of wood or cardboard between the clamp and your project to prevent marring the project surface.


Tool Box – You will need a place to keep all your tools. A good tool box not only protects your tools, it keeps them all together. Returning all you tools to one place will make them easy to locate for your next project.
